PC power management for home
Your PC doesn’t need to run all night.
Save electricity when your Windows PCs are no longer needed. Auto Shutdown Manager can power them down after the tasks you choose — and wake them on schedule.

The download starts with a 45-day full-featured trial, then continues as Free Light for private use.
Paid Home licenses: private or eligible professional use. Check eligibility. Scheduled wake-up requires compatible hardware and settings.

A simple estimate
What do a few idle hours cost?
Use your own power readings and electricity unit rate. The example below is an illustration, not a measured ASDM result.
Less idle time
per PC on each selected day
Electricity saved
over one year for 1 PC
Illustrative cost saving
over one year at €0.2896 EUR/kWh
Example estimate for 1 PC: reducing each PC from 60 W to 1 W for 5 otherwise-idle hours per day over 365 days a year gives about 107.68 kWh in illustrative annual electricity savings. At €0.2896 EUR/kWh, that is about €31.18 EUR per year.

About the electricity starting values
These dated public figures are starting values, not live tariffs or a country-by-country price comparison. Household averages may include fixed charges. For a useful estimate, replace the starting value with the variable per-kWh rate from your bill. Fixed charges are not reduced when your PC uses less energy.
- Germany: €0.3797/kWh, household average January–June 2026. Destatis, 30 September 2026.
- EU reference: €0.2896/kWh, household average July–December 2025. Eurostat, 5 May 2026.
- United States: $0.1831/kWh, residential average July 2026, preliminary. US EIA, 24 September 2026.
- Great Britain: £0.2632/kWh, average price-cap unit rate for Direct Debit in England, Scotland and Wales, October–December 2026; standing charge excluded. Ofgem unit rates.
Sources checked 17 October 2026. Expired starting values are cleared automatically; you can always enter your own rate. Calculation runs locally without a location lookup or sending your inputs. The EU reference is selected by default.
Actual savings depend on your devices, settings and current habits. A PC that already sleeps or shuts down promptly may offer little extra saving. Use the variable per-kWh rate from your bill; fixed charges are not reduced. This illustration excludes software overhead and additional start-up energy.
A familiar evening
The download finishes. The PC keeps running.
You leave a download running, step away after a game, or forget to switch off the family PC. A useful task can easily turn into hours of idle running.
Let the task finish. Then let the PC rest.
Set ASDM to wait for the activity you choose, then put the PC to sleep, hibernate it or shut it down. Add a wake-up schedule for the next time you need it.
Less time running without a reason. One less thing to remember at the end of the day.
Work done. PC off. Your evening carries on.

Free Light or a paid home license?
Pay for more control, not just an off timer.
Free Light already provides basic local power management and supported document saving. The reason to choose a paid home license is the extra scheduling and control over when your PCs sleep, hibernate, shut down and wake.

Automatic shutdown for your Windows PCs
Cut unnecessary running time
A PC that has finished its job does not need to stay on until morning. Use idle detection and time rules to decide when it can power down.
Let important tasks finish
Configure application and activity checks for downloads, backups or other jobs. The idle timer can wait while those configured signals show that the PC is still busy.
Save supported documents first
ASDM can save open documents in supported Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project, before shutting down. Configure and test the applications you use, and keep regular backups.
Wake up on your schedule
Plan a wake-up for the next time you need the PC or for a scheduled task. The available wake methods depend on the PC, its power state and your setup.
Choose sleep, hibernate or shutdown
Use the power state that fits the break: sleep for a shorter pause, or hibernate or shut down for longer periods. Time rules can change the choice during the day.
Do not leave Windows running without a reason
A fully shut-down PC is not running its normal Windows services. That can reduce the time those services are exposed, but it does not replace updates, security software or backups.
Start with one PC
Test your routine before using it everywhere.
1. Install and try
Download the 45-day trial and start with one Windows PC.
2. Set your exceptions
Choose an idle period, protect the applications and tasks you need, and enable supported document saving.
3. Test shutdown and wake-up
Check the warnings and document handling with test files, then confirm that your chosen wake method works on that PC.
Questions before you buy
Who can use these Home licenses?
These paid Home licenses are available for private use. Individual professionals, including freelancers, and small businesses may also use them professionally if they meet both limits:
- 3 or fewer employees.
- Annual revenue below €500,000 or US$500,000.
Purchases for resale are excluded.
Schools and other institutions should use the public-sector licensing route.
Which computers can I use ASDM on?
ASDM is for Windows PCs and laptops that meet the published system requirements. Check those requirements before buying, especially for older devices.
Does it save every open file?
ASDM can save open documents in supported Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project. Configure document saving and test it with your applications and chosen shutdown mode. You can also run your own shutdown scripts, for example to log out of databases or perform additional cleanup; execution depends on the selected shutdown mode. Keep regular backups, including for applications and browser forms outside document-saving support.
Will every PC wake automatically?
Scheduled waking and Wake-on-LAN depend on hardware, firmware, Windows settings, power state and, for network waking, the network setup. Some Modern Standby systems need the ASDM S0 Wake Driver. Test the intended wake method during the trial.
Will it stop a game, download or backup?
Configure ASDM’s activity checks and application exceptions for the jobs you want to protect. Use idle-aware shutdown rather than a forced cut-off, and test the settings with your own applications. ASDM cannot automatically recognise every task without the right configuration.
Can I try ASDM before buying?
Yes. The download provides a 45-day full-featured trial without registration. After the trial, it becomes Free Light for private use unless a suitable license is applied.
Keep the useful hours. Cut the idle ones.
Choose individual licenses or a package for your Windows PCs.
